The California High-Speed Rail project is an expected future high-speed rail system in the state of California and headed by California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA). The project was approved by California voters on November 4, 2008 with the passage of Proposition 1A authorizing US$9.95 billion for the project. The CHSRA is currently tasked with completing final planning, design, and environmental efforts. When built, high-speed trains capable of 220 mph (350 km/h) are anticipated to link San Francisco and Los Angeles in as little as two and a half hours. The planned system would also serve other major California cities, such as Sacramento, San Jose, Fresno, and San Diego.
Over the next 20 years the population will grow 30% in California alone. The High-Speed Train will keep California at the cutting edge of mobilization within the state. Traffic congestion, flights, and mobility will suffer and be in a gridlock status. The High-Speed Train will be highly efficient and promote effective positive sustainable urban planning land use patterns.
Quality of live will be increased and the safety of these train have been proven around the world in developed nations. High tech and reliable, these trains will help link all metro cities within the state by 2020. The project is designed well using existing freeway, rail right of ways to help minimize the impact upon land owners. The land use benefits will help to encourage transit oriented developments which cuts down urban sprawl and encourage high density developments.
